Terms
General Service - disassembly, cleaning, reassembly and lubrication. It does not include any polishing, refurbishing or any improvement in general appearance.

Repair
- includes general service and, in addition, making moderate improvements to appearance. Frequently, bushings or other parts will be required. Making or repairing parts are often necessary.

Restoration
- is repair but using material and parts (where possible) or methods (where not otherwise possible) that are from the time the item was originally made.

Conservation
- is largely a museum level direction which dictates that nothing be changed nor anything at all be added to or deleted from the piece in order to preclude any degradation or deterioration. Strict adherence will usually result in the timepiece no longer working.
